Us “Type – A’s” are doers. We tend to be highly focused, passionate, and driven to achieve. It’s a gift but it can also be a curse.
Over the years, I have learned that taking a day here or there is not enough to refresh the mind, body, and soul. Creativity cannot exist in exhaustion. Our ability to listen weakens when fatigue creeps in. We become less interested in thinking and tend to focus more on moving, faster and faster. Of course, this pace is unsustainable and the frantic energy brews into a storm where destruction is lurking close by.
Recommendations on How to Keep Your Mind, Body and Soul at Their Best in 2019:
- Take a 3 to 5 days and do nothing. Absolutely nothing. Warning: for the type-A’s, this may cause high levels of stress. Push through it!
- Learning is key to keeping the brain active and imagining. At least twice a year, take time to go to an educational event. Spend time listening, learning, and thinking – not doing.
- Travel is good for the soul. It opens your mind, palate, and energizes your being. Plan your next adventure now so you have something to look forward. This will help to protect your time. Remember time is always moving forward, and there are continuously things (including people) looking to steal yours.
When your mind, body and soul are at their best, so are your work, relationships, and creativity. This year, take time to relax, regroup, and reinvigorate. Breathe in. And then, turn it all back on.
Remember: If you don’t take a break, a break will take you.
